How do you install a free live TV app on Firestick?
Every app in the table installs from the Amazon Appstore with the remote alone, with no Downloader or extra tools. Search for the app by name from the Fire TV home screen, pick the official listing, select Get or Download, then open it. The same steps work on Fire TV Stick, Fire TV Cube and Fire TV smart TVs.
- 1
Connect and sign in
Connect the Fire TV to your home Wi-Fi and make sure it is signed in to your Amazon account. The account country decides which apps the Appstore shows.
- 2
Open search
From the home screen, select Find or the magnifying glass, then Search. You can also open the Appstore tile and search there.
- 3
Type the app name
Enter the name exactly, for example Pluto TV, Tubi, Plex or CBC Gem, and select it when it appears under the keyboard.
- 4
Check the listing
Open the app page and check that it comes from the service itself and is marked free. Skip look-alike apps with a different publisher.
- 5
Select Get or Download
Wait for the install to finish, then select Open. The app also appears in your apps row on the home screen.
- 6
Open it once and play a channel
Go to the app's Live or Live TV section and play one channel. Opening the app once also lets supported apps share their channels with the Fire TV Live tab.
How do you watch free channels in the Fire TV Live tab?
Several free apps can send their channels to the Fire TV Live tab and channel guide, so you can browse without opening each app first. Install the app, open it once, then go to Live on the home screen or press the Guide button on your remote. Amazon notes that some live TV apps need a paid subscription.
- 1
Scan for channels
Go to Settings, select Live TV, then Channel Scan, and follow the on-screen instructions.
- 2
Browse what is on
Use the On Now row on the home screen, the Live tab, or the Guide button on the remote.
- 3
Save favorites
While a channel plays, open the channel guide, press the Menu button, and choose Add to Favorite Channels or Add & Manage Channels.
Which free live TV apps work on Firestick in Canada?
Canadian Fire TV owners should start with CBC Gem, Pluto TV, Tubi and Plex. CBC says a free Gem account unlocks your local CBC TV station, and without signing in you still get the CBC TV Ottawa stream and select live events. Gem expects a Canadian Amazon account, billing address and time zone on the device.
Roku says The Roku Channel installs on Fire TV in the United States only. Sling Freestream, Xumo Play and the free Prime Video catalog are US-focused services, so if your Canadian account does not show them, stick with the four apps above.
Newer Fire TV Stick 4K Select models run Amazon's Vega OS, and CBC says Gem is not supported on that model. If an app is missing on your stick, check the app's own help page rather than installing it from somewhere else.
Do you need a Prime membership or an account?
No Prime membership is needed for these apps. Pluto TV and Sling Freestream can be watched without an account, and Plex's free live TV does not need Plex Pass, a server or an antenna. Prime Video's free titles and live channels ask you to sign in with an Amazon account, with no subscription required.
What should you skip when looking for free live TV on Firestick?
Skip anything sold as a free bundle of premium or sports channels, any pre-loaded stick, and any download that lives outside the Amazon Appstore. The apps on this page are free because they run ads, and they show only the channels they carry. If a cable network is not in their guide, it is not free there.
Where does an IPTV player fit on Fire TV?
A free live TV app brings its own channels. An IPTV player is different: it includes no channels and only plays a service you already subscribe to. If that is what you need, our Fire Stick guide covers the featured player, 7 MOTION TV, and the best Firestick IPTV app page explains how to choose one.
The Fire Stick Downloader guide is only for official packages a provider sends you. The free apps on this page all come from the Amazon Appstore and do not need it. For other screens, see apps by device.
Quick answers
Is there a free live TV app built into Firestick?
The Fire TV Live tab and channel guide are built in, but the channels come from apps you install, such as Pluto TV or Tubi. Prime Video also has free titles and live channels once you sign in with an Amazon account, with no Prime membership required.
Are free live TV apps on Firestick legal?
The apps on this page are official services distributed through the Amazon Appstore and paid for by ads, which is why they are free. Be wary of any app, stick or website that promises paid cable or sports channels at no cost.
Can I watch local news for free on Firestick?
Often, yes. Pluto TV and The Roku Channel both advertise local and national news, and in Canada a free CBC Gem account unlocks your local CBC TV station. Which local stations you get depends on where you live.
Why can't I find an app in the Fire TV Appstore?
Check that your Amazon account, billing address and device time zone match your country, and pause any VPN. Some apps are not offered on every model, including the Fire TV Stick 4K Select. Use the app's official help page rather than a download from another site.
